Abstract:

In 1756, Leidenfrost discovered how drops can levitate on hot solids, owing to the formation of a vapor cushion. After discussing the characteristics of this film, we present less classical features:

     1) how a Leidenfrost liquid (and even solid!) are likely to self-propel on a ratchet;

     2) how a kind of dynamic Leidenfrost situation can arise from the shock of a liquid on itself.
